What is tree testing?
Tree testing checks whether people can find things in your navigation. Participants see a text-only version of your menu and choose where they’d go to complete realistic tasks. Because there’s no visual design or search to lean on, it shows how well your structure and labels work on their own.
What’s the difference between tree tests, first-click tests, five-second tests, card sorts, preference tests and surveys?
A tree test checks your menu structure before anything is designed. A first-click test shows people a screen, such as a live page, mockup or wireframe, and records where they’d click first. A five-second test shows a design briefly, then asks what people remember, to check whether the main message lands. A card sort asks people to group topics in a way that makes sense to them, which helps you plan a navigation before you test it with a tree test. A preference test puts two or more designs side by side, asks people to choose one and say why, and tells you whether the favourite is clear or could be chance. A survey asks your own questions, from ratings and rankings to likelihood to recommend, and works out scores such as NPS and SUS for you.
How many participants do I need?
For tree tests, aim for around 50 people per group you want to report on. Patterns appear from about 30. For first-click and five-second tests, 30 to 50 is usually enough. For card sorts, patterns usually settle from about 15 to 20 people for an open sort, and 30 or more for a closed sort. ClickTree shows a likely range next to each result, so you can see how certain a number is.
Do participants need an account?
No. You share one link. Participants don’t sign up, and they can pick up where they left off on the same device. You can optionally ask for a name, email or gender, on the Studio and Enterprise plans.
Can I use my own participants or a research panel?
Yes. Send the link to your customers, mailing list or colleagues. If you use a panel, ClickTree can record each person’s panel ID from the link and send them back to the panel when they finish.
Can I test a live website?
Yes. For first-click and five-second tests, paste a page address and ClickTree takes a screenshot at desktop or mobile size, with cookie banners hidden. For pages behind a login, upload a screenshot or design instead.
Can I ask follow-up questions?
Yes. Add questions after any task, and at the end of a study, including the standard ease rating (SEQ) and System Usability Scale (SUS). Rules let you ask some questions only to people who, for example, didn’t find the answer.
Can I compare groups of participants, such as mobile and desktop users?
Yes. Results can be filtered to one group, and the Segments view compares two groups side by side on every measure, saying whether each difference is likely real or could be chance. Groups come from link tags (for example ?group=customers), device, screening questions and any choice or rating question.
Can I share results with my client?
On Studio and Enterprise, create a read-only link to a study’s live results, with an optional password and expiry date. Clients don’t need an account, and the link never shows participants’ names, emails or panel IDs. You can turn it off at any time. Every plan can export to CSV.
Does ClickTree use AI?
No. The findings in your results come from fixed rules applied to the numbers, so the same data always gives the same findings. Your studies and results are never used to train AI models.
Where is my data stored?
In the EU, in Frankfurt, Germany. Each workspace is separated at the database level, so only your team can see your studies and results. We don’t use advertising or tracking tools on participant pages.
Is ClickTree secure?
Yes. Every connection is encrypted with HTTPS and stored data is encrypted at rest. Passwords are kept only as a secure one-way hash, payments are handled by Stripe, and invite links work once and expire. We never sell your data or use it to train AI, and a data processing agreement is part of our Terms for client work under UK and EU data protection law.
What does the free plan include?
All six test types, 1 live study at a time, up to 5 responses per study and 50 responses a month, with live results and CSV export. No card is needed.
Can I cancel at any time?
Yes. Studio is £10 a month, or £96 a year billed annually. Enterprise is £180 a year. Prices include VAT. If you cancel, your plan stays active until the end of the period you’ve paid for.
